One certified roofing contractor, DuPont-certified for Tyvek weather barriers, told me something that stuck: the same material science that makes Tyvek good at stopping air and water while breathing is why the suits work. But the suit has a boundary. It protects you from particulate hazards, not heavy splashes, not flames, not sharp edges.
- Wear it with: safety glasses, respirator, nitrile gloves, and steel toe boots underneath. Tyvek booties are for hygiene, not foot protection.
- Skip it when: you're grinding steel, welding, handling solvents, or doing any task with high abrasion.

The difference between overalls and coveralls matters here. Overalls cover your legs and chest but have no sleeves. Coveralls are full-body, zipped garments with sleeves. For metal fence work, coveralls are the no-brainer: they protect your arms when you reach through the rails, and they won't snag easily when you bend down to set a post.
I only believe this from experience. A few years ago, we sent Tyvek suits to a metal fence crew because the client asked for 'maximum protection.' They shredded six suits in one morning. That was the last time I made that call without asking about the hazard first.
In March 2024, a crew installing a steel fence near a highway called us in a panic because their cheap cotton coveralls were already ripping. They asked for Tyvek suits as an upgrade. We talked them out of it. Instead, we sent heavy-duty 8-ounce cotton-poly coveralls and reinforced steel toe boots. The job got done without a single equipment-related delay. If you ask me what to wear on a metal fence project, this is the list:

Now the serious stuff. Is a Tyvek suit enough for chemicals? Sometimes, but only if the specific chemical is in DuPont's compatibility data. Tyvek handles many aqueous solutions and limited chemical splash, but it does not work for most solvents or prolonged liquid exposure. You have to check DuPont's compatibility data before ordering.
If your site requires a certified contractor program - for example, if you're a certified roofing contractor under DuPont's Tyvek installer program - follow that program's PPE requirements. Don't substitute a random Tyvek suit and call it compliance. The certification only means something when you use the exact product and spec described.
In this scenario, the garment is one part of a bigger system: Tyvek suit, chemical gloves, face shield, and overboots. Your steel toe boots go under the overboots. If you only buy the suit, you're missing half the protection.
The vendor who says 'this isn't a Tyvek application - here's what I'd use instead' is the one I trust.
How to Decide: The 3-Question Test
Still not sure? That's okay. Here's the quick field test I use before recommending anything:
- What is the main hazard? Dust or dirt means Tyvek or washable coveralls. Impact or sharp edges means steel toe boots plus durable coveralls. Chemicals mean checking the compatibility chart first.
- How long will your crew wear it? If it's a one-hour dirty job, a Tyvek suit or disposable coveralls is fine. For a full day of metal fence work, use something that survives the job.
- What does failure cost? A torn suit on a metal fence is an inconvenience. A torn suit around asbestos or harmful dust is a medical problem and a legal problem. Let the cost of failure drive the decision.
It took three wrong shipments before I started using this checklist. Should have done it after the first. Now it's the only way we quote rush orders.
If you're still on the fence (no pun intended), ask a supplier who's willing to say 'no' to you. That's the professional boundary. DuPont doesn't make one garment that does everything, and no honest supplier claims otherwise. The vendor who says 'this isn't our strength, but here's who does it better' earned my trust for the next order.

The difference between overalls and coveralls is simple: sleeves. The difference between working safe and just looking safe is matching the garment to the hazard.
