Common mistakes I still have to avoid
If you buy PPE for a working crew, you do not need another article about why safety is important. You need a list you can act on. I have used the checklist below for six years as the procurement manager for a 40-person industrial maintenance company. We spend about $180,000 a year on protective clothing, work gloves, boots, and disposable gloves. I have compared eight vendors in a single sourcing cycle. Maybe seven, depending on how you count a return trip, but the spreadsheet is the point.
I work in New Castle County, Delaware, about ten minutes from the DuPont Highway. That detail matters because the DuPont name is everywhere here. It also taught me not to treat a brand name as a product spec. The highway is just a road; the brand is just a starting point.
Use this checklist for standard PPE purchases for maintenance crews, warehouse teams, and food-facility maintenance. It does not replace an industrial hygienist when chemicals are dangerous or when you are setting up a full emergency hazmat response program.
Step 1: Write down the hazard before the part number
Start with the job. For each role, note what the worker is exposed to: dust, dry particles, liquid splash, a specific chemical, sharp metal, hot surfaces, impact, or just rough wear. If a chemical is present, write down the name and concentration. It sounds like paperwork, but it decides whether you buy a Tyvek suit, a Tychem suit, a leather glove with a cut liner, or a standard work boot.
From the outside, buying PPE looks like selecting from a menu. The reality is the menu only works after the hazard is named.

Step 2: When someone says DuPont hazmat suit, ask which one
People use DuPont hazmat suit as if it were one catalog item. It is not. DuPont Tyvek is not the same as DuPont Tychem. Tyvek is a good barrier against particles and limited liquid splash. Tychem is a family of chemical barrier fabrics, and even Tychem is not one material. A suit that works for one chemical can be exactly wrong for another.
According to DuPont's SafeSPEC selection tool (dupont.com, accessed January 2025), material choice depends on the specific chemical, concentration, physical state, and task. If you do not have permeation data for that chemical, the logo on the chest is not protection.
I had a purchase last year where a generic alternative was less expensive. The upside was a one-time savings of roughly $600. The risk was a failed audit and a possible worker exposure. I kept asking myself whether $600 was worth any of that. It wasn't. The product with documented test data won.
Step 3: Leather gloves men buy: compare by rating, not by look
The leather gloves men buy for heavy material handling are often selected by price and looks. That is a mistake. Leather is good for abrasion, heat, and grip, but it is not automatically a cut-resistant glove. If workers handle sharp or stamped metal, the glove needs a cut-resistant liner and a cut rating under ANSI/ISEA 105-2016.
When comparing leather gloves, ask the supplier what standard the glove meets. A good supplier will give you a test report or an ANSI cut level. If they cannot answer in one email, that answer probably does not exist.

This is the step most checklists skip. PPE that does not fit ends up on a truck seat or in a locker, and an unworn glove or boot protects nobody.
Men's work boots are a good example. Do not order from a size chart alone. Ask the crew to test boots with the socks they actually wear and, if needed, the insoles they plan to use. If someone wears a heavier winter sock in January, the boot size may need to change.
For protective footwear, look for an ASTM F2413-18 marking if the hazard assessment calls for toe, impact, or compression protection. The label, not the style name, is what an auditor will check.
Order samples in several sizes before the bulk order. One sample shipment is cheaper than a pallet of boots that do not fit.
Step 5: Can nitrile gloves be used for food? Ask for proof
The question I put into every food-related RFQ is: can nitrile gloves be used for food?
Short answer: yes, but not automatically. Nitrile is a polymer, not a food safety label. A nitrile glove can be food-contact safe if the manufacturer says it is and can show compliance, often referencing FDA 21 CFR 177.2600. If the carton only says industrial nitrile, treat it as not food safe until the supplier gives you documentation.
Put another way: the word nitrile tells you what the glove is made from. It does not tell you what is on it or in it. So check before you use it around food.
Step 6: Compare total cost, not unit price
I look at three numbers when comparing PPE quotes: unit price, freight, and fees. The big one is freight. The lowest unit price often has the highest total cost once minimums, split-shipment fees, and restocking charges appear.
Earlier this year, I nearly ordered from a supplier whose quote looked lower by about $220 on a $4,200 order. The cheaper unit price did not include freight. After freight and handling were added, the total came out higher. The higher unit price quote was the better buying decision.
Over the past six years, tracking every invoice and using a simple three-quote rule has cut our avoidable PPE overspend by roughly 17%. It also made our purchasing policy easier to defend.
Common mistakes I still have to avoid
- Buying DuPont by brand name only. Buy the SKU that matches the hazard.
- Choosing leather gloves by price. Choose them by the standard and the task.
- Ordering men's work boots without a fit test. Size charts are only a starting point.
- Assuming nitrile gloves are food safe because they are nitrile. Ask for the compliance document.
The goal is not to make buying more complicated. It is to make it repeatable. When you can write down the hazard, compare the standard, test the fit, and add up the total cost, you do not need to be a safety engineer to make a decent PPE decision.
