Common mistakes that keep showing up
If you buy safety equipment for a living, you know the feeling: a phone call at 2 p.m., an order that's needed in the morning, and a blank page on the spec. I coordinate emergency PPE orders for contractors and industrial facilities. After two years and 40+ rush orders, I've come to believe that most mistakes don't happen because someone picked the wrong brand. They happen because the spec was missing one small detail.
OSHA's PPE standard (29 CFR 1910.132) requires employers to assess hazards before selecting PPE. This checklist isn't that assessment. But it's what I use when the assessment is done and the order has to get out the door. This checklist is for the common jobsite stuff: Tyvek suits, work boots, gloves, and the details that turn into rush orders. If you're dealing with chemical splash, confined space entry, or unknown exposures, stop reading and get a safety professional.
1. Start with the hazard, not the logo
Dupont is one of the most searched names in PPE, and for good reason. But Dupont products aren't interchangeable. A Tyvek 400 coverall isn't the same as a Tyvek 600 model, and neither one is a fully encapsulated chemical suit. When someone asks for “men's Dupont Tyvek suits,” the first question should be: What's the exposure?
Tyvek suits work well for hazardous dusts, contaminated particles, and some non-hazardous liquid splashes. They're not the answer for every chemical. People think buying a trusted brand automatically means the right protection. Actually, the hazard determines the product; the brand trust only matters after the spec is right.
If you're ordering men's Dupont Tyvek suits, sizes are part of the spec. A suit that's too tight rips at the shoulder when a worker reaches up; a suit that's too loose can snag on a latch. Use the sizing chart, not a guess.
Checkpoint: Read the technical data sheet. Look for particle filtration efficiency, liquid penetration results, and seam type. If the data sheet doesn't match the hazard, the logo doesn't matter.
2. Don't assume black nitrile gloves are food safe
Are black nitrile gloves food safe? Short answer: sometimes. Color has nothing to do with food safety. Nitrile gloves are considered food safe only if the manufacturer compounds and tests them to FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 or a similar certification. If the product page doesn't say “food contact compliant,” don't assume it.
I used to think any black nitrile glove was fine for food handling. Then I watched a food truck owner get shut down by a county inspector because his gloves had no food-safe marking. He paid $400 for a re-inspection and an emergency restock. That changed how I check glove orders.
Food-safe gloves also need to be stored away from chemical gloves. If a crew keeps both in the same drawer, contamination can happen before the glove is even opened.
Checkpoint: For food handling, buy gloves that specifically state FDA food-contact compliance. And check that they're powder-free: powdered gloves don't belong in a kitchen.
3. Buy work boots by the rating, not just the comfort
Ariat work boots are a common request in my orders, and, to be fair, a lot of crews swear by them. They're comfortable and they hold up. But comfort isn't compliance. If your site requires safety toe or electrical hazard (EH) protection, the specific model has to meet the rating. Not every Ariat work boot is the same.
Look for ASTM F2413-18 on the boot label. That's the standard for impact and compression resistance. Also know the difference between steel toe and composite toe: both can meet the standard, but they respond differently in cold or heavy conditions. If your crew is near live electrical parts, EH-rated boots aren't optional.
If workers are on their feet for 12 hours, boot comfort matters for morale. But the safety rating has to be confirmed first. A boot that feels great and doesn't have the mark is a liability, not a tool.
Checkpoint: Check the label inside the boot. If it doesn't list the ASTM rating, the boot isn't the one for a rated site.
4. Walk the job, not just the PPE aisle
It took me a few near-misses to realize that jobsites have weird hazards that don't show up in a generic PPE catalog. Take vinyl fence installation. It isn't a “vinyl fence” category, but crews cutting panels generate sharp plastic edges, dust, and noise. They need cut-resistant gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection decent enough for a saw.
If they're cutting vinyl fence panels with a circular saw, add a face shield and hearing protection, not just glasses. Dust from vinyl can be irritating too.
When I'm triaging an order, the first question isn't “How many Tyvek suits?” It's “What are they actually doing?” That's when the order starts to make sense.
Checkpoint: List the specific tasks: cutting, digging, lifting, painting. Match PPE to the task, not to the title of the project. For cut-resistant gloves, look for an ANSI/ISEA 105 level that matches the material being handled.
5. Check what's already in the trailer
Before you order new gear, inspect the old gear. Old Tyvek suits can look fine on the outside and still have damaged seams. I've seen a “clean” Tyvek suit rip like paper when a worker bent over. For a hazardous exposure, that's a deal-breaker.
Dupont products have performance limits, and those limits depend on storage too. If gear was stored in direct sunlight, near heat, or in crushed packaging, don't trust it for critical work. Some Tyvek garments have a printed shelf-life date; respect it.
If a suit has been used in a chemical situation, don't reuse it. Disposable PPE is disposable for a reason. Some Tyvek garments can be worn multiple times if they're not contaminated, but you need written procedures, not a guess.
Checkpoint: Squeeze and flex the fabric, inspect seams, and check any date codes. When in doubt, throw it out.
6. Keep a spare box for the 8 a.m. “oops”
Rush orders aren't always from poor planning. Sometimes a worker tears a suit at 8 a.m. and needs a replacement by noon. Keeping a small box of spare Dupont Tyvek suits and gloves on site is a no-brainer. A $60 order turns a 10-minute problem into an emergency with $150 in rush shipping.
Last quarter alone, I processed seven rush orders that would have been avoided with one spare box and a few pairs of extra gloves. That's not a statistic from a survey: that's just the orders I remember.
Put the spare box where the crew can actually get it. A locked cabinet in the office doesn't help anyone at 8 a.m.
Checkpoint: Stock at least two spares for every crew size, and rotate the stock so old gear doesn't sit forever.
7. Build a 48-hour buffer into any deadline that matters
Honestly, I'm in the business of emergency PPE orders, so I get why people wait. But after enough close calls, our company policy now requires a 48-hour buffer for any order tied to an inspection, a permit, or a penalty date. In March 2024, a client called at 11 a.m. needing 25 Tyvek suits and cut-resistant gloves for an inspection the next morning. We delivered, but it cost $120 in rush shipping and a lot of coordination. The alternative was a contractor losing a full day and paying a penalty for the inspection delay.
When you place the order, give a deadline date, not “ASAP.” “ASAP” changes meaning when someone sees a rush order. A specific date forces everyone to work backward and gives you a real check on the expedite cost.
That's when we implemented the 48-hour buffer policy. It's not exciting, but it works.
Checkpoint: Work backward from the deadline. If the arrival date is within 48 business hours of the deadline, call the supplier and confirm the expedite fee before you place the order.
Common mistakes that keep showing up

- Choosing Ariat work boots based on style instead of the ASTM rating.

Here's the honest limitation part: this checklist covers most standard PPE purchases, probably 80% of what I see. It's not enough for hazmat cleanup, confined space entry, or significant chemical splash hazards. If your team needs that level of protection, you need an industrial hygienist and a much deeper conversation, not a product recommendation. The right answer in those cases isn't “the best brand.” It's the product that fits the specific exposure. That's not a satisfying answer, but it's the one that keeps people safe.
