It Started With a Collapsed Cattle Fence
Last March, at 4:17 PM on a Tuesday, my phone rang. The caller ID showed a number from eastern Colorado. A man’s voice, tense but not panicked, cut in before I finished the greeting. “I’ve got a dozen Angus bulls heading for the county road, and I need a fence fixed tonight. Can you help?”
That was the first of three calls I would get from Dale that week. I’ve been handling rush orders at an industrial safety supply company for 11 years, and in that time, I’ve triaged over 300 emergency requests. The first question I always ask is the same: “What’s the actual deadline, and what happens if we miss it?” For Dale, the answer was brutal. The county impound fee on loose cattle was $30,000, and animal control would pick the bulls up Thursday morning if the fence wasn’t secure.
Dale was standing near the south pasture when he called. I could picture him from the sound: the squeak of brown work boots in wet soil, the clink of a chain link, the low grumble of a pickup idling in the background. He told me the fence posts had rotted at the base, and the section near the creek had collapsed entirely. He needed a corrosion-resistant coating for the steel posts, enough to cover forty of them. Then he added, almost as an afterthought, that his cattle trough water filter was clogged. He had a replacement cartridge. Our regular supply vendor couldn’t deliver until the next week, which is why he’d called us. I verified the specs on DuPont’s product page, confirmed the 5-gallon kit was in stock, and quoted him $380 for the coating plus $120 for overnight freight. He didn’t flinch. “If that fence isn’t fixed by Thursday,” he said, “the impound fee alone is $30,000. The coating is the cheap part.”
The Coating That Wouldn’t Cure
The shipment left that night and arrived the next morning. By Wednesday afternoon, Dale was applying the coating to the last post when he called again. “This stuff is still tacky after eight hours,” he said. “The manual says it should cure in four.”
I asked him what the surface temperature was. There was a pause. “Highs today were 48 degrees.”
That was the problem. Below that, the polymer won’t cure properly; the film stays soft, which means it picks up dust, scratches easily, and eventually lets moisture reach the steel. I could tell Dale was frustrated. He’d followed the manual exactly—except he hadn’t checked the ambient temperature. I gave him a workaround: rig up a tarp shelter around the fence line, put an old propane heater inside, and keep the area above 60°F for at least four hours. He had the heater in his barn. He called it “ghetto engineering,” but it worked. By Thursday morning, the coating had hardened enough to hold the bulls.
The Upside-Down Water Filter Cartridge
Once the fence was secure, we moved to the second issue: the water filter cartridge. Dale told me he’d already tried installing the new cartridge himself and the housing was leaking like crazy. I asked how he’d aligned the arrow on the cartridge with the intake line. He went quiet. “Arrow?”
The replacement cartridge had a direction arrow molded into the end cap. It has to point upward in the housing, so that the sediment settles in the right chamber. Dale had installed it upside down. The Real Lesson: Teach, Don’t Just Ship
By Friday morning, Dale’s bulls were safely contained, his water system was running, and he sent me a photo of two dozen Angus steers lined up at the trough. The caption read: “You saved my bacon.” It made me smile.
But that order taught me more than any training seminar. The coating and the cartridge were the visible solution, but the real value was in the pre-shipping questions I’d asked—and the ones I hadn’t. I knew coatings have cure windows and filters have orientation. I assumed a customer who’d researched the product and bought the right materials would also know those things. He didn’t, and that’s on me as much as him.
Since that call, I’ve built a checklist for every urgent material order: confirm the application temperature, check the manual version, ask if the customer has seen the diagram. It adds five minutes to the intake call, but it saves hours of rushed follow-up. If I could redo that first conversation, I’d ask about temperature and the cartridge arrow before sending the quote. At the time, I was focused on delivering a product, not on whether the customer could install it correctly. That was a rookie mistake, even after 11 years.
So here’s my honest advice for anyone ordering a specialty coating or a replacement filter: read the relevant section of the manual out loud before you start. Check the ambient temperature. Look at the arrow on the cartridge. And if you’re not sure, ask. I’d rather spend ten minutes explaining something than untangle a mistake three days later.
Bottom line: An informed customer isn’t just easier to work with. They’re the only kind you can trust in an emergency.
