If you're hoping to find one checklist that covers all safety equipment decisions, I'm going to disappoint you: it doesn't exist. The right gear depends on the work, the environment, and the specific hazards. Anyone who tells you different is selling something—probably a pricey catalog.
I'm a quality compliance manager at a DuPont safety equipment distributor in Delaware. I review every order before it ships—roughly 200 items a month, maybe 180, I'd have to check the system. Over four years of this, I've rejected maybe 7% of first deliveries in 2024 due to spec mismatches, material defects, or counterfeit components that slipped into the supply chain.
The recurring pattern I see: crews order safety gear like office supplies. One glove model for everyone. One type of hi-vis vest. Then it doesn't fit the actual job and gets thrown in the back of a truck, which is worse than not having it because people think they're protected.

Scenario 1: Fence Installation Crews
Fence drawing and the planning phase
"Fence drawing" isn't office work. When you're laying out a boundary, staking corners, and walking the property line, you're doing field work. The terrain's uneven, there's poison ivy, there's hidden wire or rebar in tall grass. For this phase, I recommend sturdy boots with ankle support, cargo pants or heavy denim, and high-visibility cover if the line runs near a road.
I've seen planning-phase injuries happen because someone wore running shoes to a site walk. That's not a gear failure—it's a gear absence. The drawing part is the easiest to skip protection on, and it's where basic injuries happen.
Fence posts and wire: the real risk zone
Driving fence posts, especially steel T-posts, demands impact protection on the back of the hand. Padding, reinforced knuckles, secure grip. And when you're stretching wire or attaching mesh fencing, you need cut resistance—Kevlar-lined leather gloves with an EN 388 cut rating of level 3 or better.
These are different gloves doing different jobs. Post driving gloves are not wire stringing gloves. I know crews want one pair that does everything, but if the wire snaps, a non-cut-resistant glove might as well be a dish towel.
We ran a blind test on this at our warehouse. 15 workers, two gloves, no labels. 11 identified the impact-rated glove as "safer feeling" without knowing which was more expensive. It costs about $6 more per pair. For an 8-person crew, that's $48—less than one hour of billable labor for a single worker. You can't tell me that's not worth it.

Hi-vis and brand color
ANSI/ISEA 107 Class 2 or Class 3 garments are the baseline for roadside work. Fluorescent yellow-green or orange with retroreflective stripes. That part is well understood.
The part people get wrong: customizing hi-vis gear with company branding. I've seen customers request "safety orange" and get a vest that clashes with their corporate identity. This matters on multi-crew job sites when you need to identify your workers at a glance. If your company logo has a specific color—say, a blue similar to Pantone 286 C—have your supplier match it. Industry-standard color tolerance is Delta E under 2 for brand-critical colors. Over Delta E 4, the difference is visible to anyone. A work crew that doesn't match its own branding is a coordination and safety hazard.
Tyvek and task-specific layers
Road crews in Delaware do more than stand in the right lane. They strip paint, patch concrete, repair signage and fiberglass panels. A Tyvek coverall worn over hi-vis gear keeps silica, paint mist, and fiberglass fibers off your skin and out of the truck cab. If the suit tears, replace it. They're single-use by design, not by philosophy.
The numbers said the cheaper, thinner coverall made sense for our budget. My gut said the material felt wrong at the seams. We tested it—the tear resistance was about a third below the spec sheet value. Returned 4,000 units and went back to the supplier we'd used before. I trust a vendor's spec sheet a lot less now, regardless of the price.
Scenario 3: Facility Staff at Entertainment and Hospitality Venues
Take the Harrington Raceway & Casino on South DuPont Highway in Harrington, DE. It's a full facility: gaming floor, dining, event space, grounds. The maintenance and janitorial staff there face a completely different hazard profile than highway crews.
The common failure I see in facilities is the "one glove in the supply closet" approach. The same nitrile glove used to clean bathrooms, wipe down slot machines, and wash dishes. That's a chemical exposure issue. Cleaning agents each have their own breakthrough time against nitrile; not all nitrile gloves are equal.
- Chemical work: Match the glove's chemical resistance rating to the specific cleaning agents on your SDS sheets. Don't guess.
- Kitchen and food prep: Cut-resistant gloves rated for knife work. A facility kitchen is not a hardware store.
- General maintenance: A separate set of work gloves. Do not use the same pair for chemical cleaning and mechanical repairs.
If you manage a crew like this, buy three distinctly colored glove types and label the storage bins. Color coding prevents cross-use. It's cheap, it's obvious, and it works.
Scenario 4: How to Wash Leather Gloves
Here's a practical one. If you've bought decent leather work gloves, you want them to last more than a season.
The old "never wash leather" belief comes from a time when most work gloves were chrome-tanned with older tanning chemistry that stiffened or shrank if wet. That was true for a lot of legacy gear. Modern leather—especially the full-grain, Kevlar-lined stuff—handles washing much better. You should still be careful, but washing isn't the problem people think it is.
How I tell customers to clean leather work gloves:
- Brush off dry dirt and debris before they get moistened. Washing mud into wet leather embeds grit deep in the fibers and accelerates wear.
- Hand wash in cool water with saddle soap or a dedicated leather cleaner. Work the soap in with your fingers or a soft cloth. Don't soak them; ten to fifteen seconds of agitation is enough.
- Rinse quickly with clean cool water. You don't have to remove every trace of soap, since residual conditioner can remain beneficial.
- Pat dry with a towel and reshape them while damp. Air dry at room temperature. Never use a heat dryer unless you're trying to shrink them on purpose.
- Once dry, apply a leather conditioner or neatsfoot oil. Supple leather maintains its cut resistance much better than dry, cracked leather.
We've tested this in our lab through repeated wash cycles. Conditioned leather holds up after five cycles. Unconditioned leather develops cracks that reduce cut resistance noticeably by the third cycle. If I remember correctly, the gap in our abrasion testing was about 40% by cycle five. So: condition your gloves, and they'll keep protecting.
How to figure out which scenario you're in
Here's a quick way to decide, whether you're purchasing for a crew, a facility, or yourself:
- Is there traffic exposure? If workers are within 15 feet of moving vehicles, hi-vis comes first. Then add task-specific gear.
- What's the injury pattern—cut or impact? Wire, sheet metal, glass, and knives demand cut-resistant gloves. Posts, hammers, and heavy steel demand impact-rated gloves. Different scenarios, different purchases.
- Are chemicals in play? Find nitrile or chemical-resistant gloves rated for the specific chemicals in your SDS. If the glove isn't rated for that chemical, it's not a PPE solution—it's a false feeling of protection.
- Is your question about care? Leather work gloves are washable with the right process, and they need conditioning to stay safe. Replace when the leather thins, stitching pulls, or the liner starts showing through.
One last thing: transparent pricing matters
I've watched purchasing managers pick a supplier based on a low quote for gloves, then get hit with freight surcharges, handling fees, and "compliance documentation" fees that wipe out the savings. I do not think every supplier does this; I think the ones who do rely on you not asking.
When you get a quote, ask what's NOT included before you ask what the price is. The supplier who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks a few hundred dollars higher—usually costs less in the end. In my opinion, that's the mark of a vendor worth doing repeat business with. Transparent pricing is part of effective safety: if the accounting doesn't make sense, the gear will be rationed, and rationed gear fails.
There's no universal kit and no single answer. Match the equipment to the scenario, verify the specs, and wash that pair of gloves while they're still clean enough to make a difference.
